A LETTER TO CHANA On the back of the bulletin this week you will find a letter from the Accommodation Co-ordinator at Ardrossan Short Stay Hostel which provides shelter and support to men and women who are, for whatever reason – and there are many of them - homeless or in need of support to start a home. CHANA (Churches Homeless Action in North Ayrshire) was initially set up by the Poverty Group of the Embracing Change process and now involves all the Catholic parishes in the area plus four from the Church of Scotland. Clearly the group is doing something worthwhile and important – the letter makes that very clear – but I wonder how many of us realise that this is being done in our name? The number of people actively involved is still quite small, so maybe, now that you know about it, you might like to play a part in it.
RETIREMENT UPDATE I came to an agreement with Bishop Nolan this week about the details surrounding my retirement which I thought it was only right to share with you. The plan is that I will cease to be parish priest of St Bride’s on Sunday 21st June when, God willing, I will celebrate my final Mass in that capacity. Some time before that, however, I will have moved to Largs to live in the flat there. In this way I will, hopefully, avoid too sudden a change and give myself a chance to ease into retirement rather than do it overnight. The date for this will, I hope, be May 11th. Between then and June 21st the plan is that I will commute between Largs and West Kilbride and during this time things in the parish should remain as they are. This, after all, is happening all over the diocese as priests live in one place and travel to sometimes several others.
ANNUAL WHITE MASS This is a strange title, but it refers to a Mass held every year for Healthcare Professionals and others who who work in the health and care sectors throughout Scotland. The Mass this year will be held in Our Lady of Good Aid Cathedral in Motherwell on Sunday 9th February at 10.30.a.m. Bishop Toal of Motherwell will be the Principal Celebrant and refreshments will be served afterwards in St Bride’s Hall across from the Cathedral.
LOOKING AHEAD Next Sunday afternoon, after Mass, I hope to go away for nine or ten days. Normally this would be to Sapin, but that option has gone now that the apartment I was in the habit of going to has been sold. And so I hope to go to Lytham where the Holy Child Sisters have a house with a small cottage attached. The hope is to read and to relax.
NEXT MEETING FOR PARENTS Just to remind you that the proposed date for the next meeting for parents is currently Tuesday 11th February. Please let me know if there is any problem with this date.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH A parishioner who wants to remain anonymous recently made a very generous donation of £4000 pounds to the parish. This is the first time such a things has happened in my fifty hears as a priest.
THE PARISH WEBSITE The parish website which was not working last week is now working again. But it needs a lot of work done on it behind the scenes. Sharon, the person from Kilmarnock who looks after it, has agreed to do this, hopefully between now and Easter, so we just have to hope that it keeps going until then. But as I said last week, the number of people who have missed it has surprised me. It is obvious that it means a lot to people from all kinds of places, some of them very far away.
THE SACRAMENT OF CONFIRMATION The bishop will celebrate this Sacrament for the parishes of Largs, Millport, West Kilbride, Kilbirnie, Beith, Dalry and Ardrossan in St Peter’s on Tuesday 4th February. This is not so far away now, so please keep Manus, Ivor and now Nicholas and their familes in your prayers.
ADULT EDUCATION IN THE DIOCESE Despite advertising it in the bulletin for a number of weeks, there has been no interest expressed in the diocesan wide programme of meetings – six meetings between January and June – on Pope Francis’ excellent document on the meaning of holiness in the modern world. It may happen that there is a meeting in one of the other parishes in the area, and if there is, I will let you know. I would, however, be interested to know why no-one found the idea of the meetings attractive
